Doll Clinic - tools (english version)

I - Forceps

It's known as Kocher's forceps or haemostatic forceps.

The inventor of this clip is Dr. Eugène Koeberlé (french wiki page).
It is stainless steel, very solid.
It may have teeth or not, straight or curved, different sizes ... according to its use in the medical field.

What use in the world of dolls ?

I use it to stop elastic strings when I assembly/disassembly a BJD.
I haven't found yet an other more practical tool.

Where to find ?

Ebay : prices can be attractive but shipping cost is high;
e-stores specialized in medical equipment : the prices are attractive, be sure that they sell to everyone and know shipping cost;
garage sale : low price but you must love rummage;
Friend in the medical world (medicine university, biology, nurse ...)

II - Elastic strings

No need really to introduce ...
Indeed, doll's pieces are held together with 2 or 3 elastics.
There are different diameters for the elastic round : from 1.5 mm to 5 mm.

What use in the world of dolls ?

Need a picture ?!

Where to find ?

• Some companies (Souldoll, Iple House...) offer one elastic when you buy a doll;
• On many companies' websites, in Tools category;
• ebay's specialized shops;
In haberdashery/notions store
,don't forget to take with you the original elastics to compare.

 III - Hooks

In 98% of cases, there are 5 in a doll :
• 1 big hook in the head for holding legs' elastics;
• 2 medium (or small) hooks inside the wrists for holding arms' elastic and the hands;
• 2 medium inside the ankles for holding legs' elastics and the feet;
• on some models like Fairyland's Littlefees, there's a hook for holding the upper and lower parts of the body, inside the hips.

What use in the world of dolls  ?

Only a function of holding elastics.

Where to find ?

• Some companies (Souldoll, Iple House...) offer one elastic when you buy a doll;
• On many companies' websites, in Tools category;

In hardware store, the hooks are too big for dolls.

Did you find them on the picture ?

IV - String pullers and helpers

It'a a really helpfull thing because elastics must be stretched a minimum.
In fact, if your elastic is longer or softer, all the pieces are disjointed, it's not good !
The elastic string puller can be a rigid rod sold in some companies, a strong rope, a steel wire or a long ribbon.

What use in the world of dolls ?

Without elastic string puller, I wish you good luck for assembly your doll.

Where to find ?

• Elastic string puller is sold in some companies;
• Rope for roast, really strong but it hurts your hands;
• Steel wire in hardware store or crafts store;
• Ribbon in haberdashery (notions store) or in your sweatshirt.

V - Scissors, elastic hanger, 15 cm (6") needle

Besides the equipment already mentioned, I also am using scissors, chopsticks and a big needle.

What use in the world of dolls ?

My scissors are medical scissors (strong and sharp), any other pair of scissors can be used for cut an elastic.
The elastic hanger are simple chopsticks, unpainted (the paint can stain the resin). I put a chopstick in a loop of elastic, getting out of the arm / leg.
Like this, I have a free hand to place the hook.
The big needle is for sewing mattress. I use it to lead the ribbon and the elastic through the small pieces of a tiny doll.

Where to find ?

A pair of scissors : almost anywhere;

Chopsticks : mine are disposable,most of chinese restaurant offer a pair for lunch;

The needle for mattress as haberdashery (notions store), for less than 3 for 2 needles.

VI - Bent nose pliers and cutting pliers

Who said metal hook and wire, said pliers required.
I use "micro-tools", ie that these pliers are less than 12 cm (5").

What use in the world of dolls ?

Open or close a hook, cut a wire...
Take the pliers and it's resolved.

Where to find ?

The tool box of the male of the house;
Hardware store;

VII - Various forceps

There is always need additional forceps in the reassembly of a doll.
They are shown in the photo further down the page.
It was not easy to identify, given the large number of forceps used in the medical world.
At the top :
tissue forcep without teeth;
On the down :
Adson tissue forceps 1x2 teeth;
On the right :
medline Backhaus towel clamps.

What use in the world of dolls ?

The large tissue forceps allows me to catch my ribbon or elastic when I struggle to move them inside a piece's hole.
The Adson's forceps has for me almost the same utility as the one above.
As to the last, I didn't found yet a task for this forceps, given its specificity.
